A novel two switch buck-boost converter with reduced switching and conduction components

Abstract

This study presents a non-isolated DC to DC converter, which can change its mode among buck, boost and buck-boost mode by adjusting gate signals. The scheme for gate signals can be designed to minimize power losses or to attain stable operation, along with states of input source and output load. Although proposed converter has the same number of components as conventional TSBB(two switch buck-boost) converter, the proposed converter has fewer conduction components and switching components that results in reduced power losses than the conventional TSBB. Moreover, the metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor(MOSFET)s' source terminals of the proposed converter are directly connected to ground. This topology has an advantage in selecting gate driver IC(integrated circuit)s in terms of that the ICs would not necessarily provide high-side gate signal. PCB was designed to verify the improvement of the proposed converter.
